The Happiness Factor and Success

What makes you really happy? This is a loaded question since what makes each of us happy is as unique to us as our DNA. And yet we often fall into the trap of wanting things that “should” make us happy. Here is what Shawn Anchor, author of The Happiness Advantage has to say: “Our most commonly held formula for success is broken. Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This isn’t just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organizations around the globe.” So how do we handle our unhappiness if we believe that our circumstances dictate it? We make a choice to change our way of “being”, of how we see our life. Once we do that-magic happens. We attract situations, people, opportunities to us. The opposite is true for people who don’t choose to focus on happiness. Have you ever been around negative people who literally suck the air out of a room? They actually repel people. If you want to be successful it is important to energetically magnetize people to you-not...

Fearful or Fabulous-You Choose

Are you settling for less than a thrilling life? Do you play small and safe instead of big and bold? What one thing would you like to change in your life for the better? When we want something to change in our lives, we are typically more motivated when we are running away from pain as opposed to reaching towards the promise of something better-something more fabulous! This is why we often see people make big changes when they hit “rock bottom”. They are in so much pain that it becomes too difficult to stay in the status quo and so they will try anything to get out of this pain. However there is another way of manifesting what you want in your life that comes from creating with a sense of inspiration and purpose as you move towards something better as opposed to moving away from something painful. And this is the kind of manifestation that sets the most successful people apart from the rest and allows them to grow and stretch and push boundaries of what is possible. Real transformation happens in our lives when we move from a position of fear and pain to power and abundance. When I talk about power, I am not referring to egoic power but an innate knowing that you can create something and handle whatever comes your way during the process. It is the power that is inspired by what is possible as opposed to what is safe. Standing in your power is a state of “being”. It is your core strength that stays sure and centered through all of...

Baby Boomer Woman -Let’s Defy Ageism

I love being part of the Baby Boomer generation of women who literally changed the world for future generations of women on so many levels. And one of my missions as a coach and thought leader is to beat the drum against the stigma of ageism against women in our society so that our daughters will feel passionate and vital about their lives at every age and know that with age comes so many gifts to be treasured. And it starts with our generation showing them the way-defying the naysayers who would keep us playing small and invisible with the same passion that we did when we burned our bras and lobbied our government for equal rights. It starts with each one of us and all we have to do is lead by example and embrace our one and only life. Let’s show them what we are made of. Let’s show ourselves what we are made of. Let’s stop asking for permission and start taking ownership of the world we create instead of allowing our society to define who we are. Prominent women are speaking up and taking the initiative for change. Meryl Streep funds a screenwriting lab specifically for women over 40 so that women’s voices are heard in film. Not only is there still a large wage gap between what men earn and what women earn, there is currently such a disproportionate number of men screenwriters, that the interesting and rich voices of mature women in our society are becoming obsolete. And that simply can’t happen! Think about it. Movies can change the way we look at...
