A Good Coach Vs. A Good Friend

A Good Coach Vs. A Good FriendI believe that there are a lot of you who would benefit greatly from hiring a coach to help you break through limitations, let go of things that don’t serve you and create your most amazing life.

However many of you don’t understand how a coach helps you with this. I mean, why not just consult with your best friend for free, right?

Here are 3 reasons why a good coach will help you get what you want in a more compelling way.

1) You Are The Agenda– When you hire a good coach your agenda will be her top priority and she will hold that for you -even when you cave, or forget or feel that you just can’t have, be or do what you want.

Here is an example: You have hired a coach because you want to start a new business. You are really excited about this phase of your life and want to create this business that up until now you have pushed aside due to taking care of other’s needs. In order to do this you know that you need to carve out time each day to work on your business. However everyone that you love is so used to having you at their beck and call and you are having a hard time saying no.

A good coach will help you with this since your agenda is to start your business. A good friend or relative may have their own agenda (conscious or subconscious) that wants you to stay the same because it is better for them.

A good coach will also tell you the truth, whether it is difficult or not. A good friend may tell you what you want to hear, for fear of offending you.

2) Limiting Beliefs Can be Tricky– Most of what stops people from accomplishing what they want are the beliefs that prevent them from taking action. These limiting beliefs are often subconscious and they often come up when you are stretching and growing. They are there to keep you safe (by playing small so you don’t get hurt) but they sabotage you from moving forward if you let them.

There are so many ways that limiting beliefs come up in our lives. However, most of us don’t realize that we are doing this. We really believe our beliefs. A good coach will recognize these beliefs for what they are and help us handle them.

Friends may have a hard time recognizing limiting beliefs. Or they may like playing the victim with you and commiserating about how the world isn’t fair (instead of looking for more empowering ways to “see” your circumstances and move forward).

I am not saying that your friend doesn’t mean well. I am just saying that a good coach will help you see the best way to look at things so that they serve you and what you really want.

3) You Are Creative, Resourceful and Whole- A good coach believes that you already have everything it takes to create the life you want. Instead of looking at you as weak or a victim, she will hold you as creative, resourceful and whole.

When the coach sees you this way she helps you tap into your power in a way that serves you best and has a ripple effect on everything in your life. When you come from this place of power, you are more joyous, confident and you make better decisions.

A good coach understands that everyone she works with is different. She works at unlocking what works for you so that you can own your special brand of magnificence.

Don’t get me wrong, good friends are so important in our lives, but a good coach will help you see the world in a completely different way so that you can totally live your best life-full out and on fire!

It is all about you when you are working with a good coach!

  1. I believe in all 3 areas you have posted Marianne!
I call when you attempt to coach a family member or friend *Froaching* it just does not give the client the opportunity to be coached without an agenda. Have you ever seen an Olympic athlete without a coach? I was in a senior leadership role for 7 years prior to hiring my executive coach. I grew more as an individual in the last 3 years along side of my coach than I had the 2 decades before. Select a coach that will always support you, however this coach should not have any problem holding you accountable the way you ask to be held, and they should also assist you in stretching your goals higher than you can even begin to imagine!
