Manifesting a Magical Business 2017

If you are planning your business goals out for this year , try something different. Instead of looking at your business from a left brain, linear approach, think about how you can tap into that underused creative right side of your brain to create the life and business that you would like. Business doesn’t have to be difficult, boring and deplete your life energy. It can be incredibly joyful, interesting and fill your life with an abundance of energy if you decide to make it that way. And frankly-it is your choice. This goes for you if you are a Real Estate agent, Interior Designer, Accountant or any small business owner (or large for that matter).Once you make a decision to look at your business from a more creative point of view-you will understand the mindset of the most interesting and accomplished entrepreneurs. People like Oprah, Steve Jobs, Mary Kay Ash, Arianna Huffington, Gary Keller, J.K. Rowlings, Angie Hicks (Angie’s List) all have one thing in common. They think outside of the box and who they are is congruent with how they “show up” in business. They are willing to trust their instincts and take the road less travelled, to differentiate themselves. When we create our businesses in a way that is congruent with who we are and what motivates us, we will tap into an abundance of energy and ideas for our business that can’t be found from a linear approach. Here are some ways to tap into that creative, magical entrepreneurial spirit: Decide on a Theme When you do your business plan this year decide on a...

Sizing Up Your Success Habits

I was thinking about some of the qualities that make people successful and I thought that I would share them with you to get you motivated for 2017.  After all, it is right around the corner….yikes!! See how many of these habits you practice. Before you do keep in mind that some of these habits involve how you are doing things (action) and some involve how you are being (mindset) and both are extremely important. We tend to focus more on action but if our mindset sabotages us, it is like stepping on the gas and the brakes at the same time. Doing 1) Successful people do things each day that help them build momentum 2) Successful people schedule in time to work on their business instead of in it 3) Successful people work on their most important “to dos” each day 4 ) Successful people make decisions instead of endlessly waffling 5) Successful people take charge and make things happen 6) Successful people surround themselves with positive, “forward thinking” people Being 1) Successful people feel the fear and do it anyways 2) Successful people don’t waste time being petty and critical of others 3) Successful people stay focused on the big vision of what they want 4) Successful people realize that it is a marathon, not a sprint 5) Successful people have an attitude of gratitude 6) Successful people take full responsibility for how they create their lives As you look through these qualities, how are you stacking up? Where could you improve? Pay particular attention to how you are being, how you show up. Action steps are...

Fire up Your Home Staging Biz

for the seasoned stager who wants more-more money, more freedom and more life As a personal and professional development coach, I have spoken with many seasoned home staging clients who started their business because they are creative and talented  and love to express themselves through their work. When it comes to marketing and packaging a house for sale, they are Rockstars. Ironically, these same Rockstars that understand how to market and package a home, fall short when it comes to marketing and packaging their business so that potential clients see their value and want to hire them! They are great at staging but don’t really understand what it takes to grow their business. They play smaller than they should because they don’t expect enough for themselves or they feel as though others have something that they don’t- a secret sauce that they can’t access. The truth is that growing a business takes work! It takes focused attention on the small steps that move you towards the larger goals-the mundane, every day steps as well as the glorious big leaps of faith that propel you forward. It  takes courage to learn about yourself, push boundaries on what you might think is possible and break your self imposed glass ceilings. Many of these same seasoned stagers find that their unpredictable schedules, demands for their time, high maintenance clients and need to please everyone causes them overwhelm and frustration. They are working really hard and feel as though they should be making more money. They simply are not sure what they need to do or which direction they should go in so...

Lies We Tell Ourselves About Time and Productivity

Have you ever noticed yourself feeling as though you have no time to spend time with your family, exercise or do a hobby that lights you up? Do you know that you should be working more “on” your business and less “in” it so that you will get better results, but you just can’t find the time? Are you always reacting to your customer’s needs but feel as though there is not enough time in the day to take care of everything and everyone? I know that I have had all of these feelings and I totally understand how easy it is to get swept away with the endless responsibilities that come with being a business owner. However, we have far more control over our time than we think. It just takes stepping back and taking a good hard look at the lies that we tell ourselves about time. Here are a few things to think about: Lie # 1-Being busy is the same as being productive- It is so easy to fill our days with a lot of minutia that makes us feel as though we are being productive but is often “busywork” that is not as important as projects that move our business forward and produce results. It is important to check in throughout the day and ask yourself these questions: “Am I being productive or busy?” “How can I be more proactive and less reactive in my business today?” “What results are my #1 priority today and how can I get them done?” Lie #2- Giving yourself more time to work on a project will help...

Are You Chasing Real Success or False Success?

If you are a baby boomer like myself, you remember the opulent 80’s. It was a decadent period of time when having more material things like big houses and fancy cars was a sign of success. Even fashion was extravagant with big hair, shoulder pads and glamorous dresses. Dynasty was the show to watch and everything in our culture glorified money and the accumulation of expensive material items. I was in Real Estate in the late 80’s and I remember one of my colleagues used to always say “He who dies with the most toys wins!” In the 80’s having more was a symbol of success. I bought into that idea of success as a young Mother, not because we had a lot of money. On the contrary. We struggled a lot to make ends meet. However I felt as though I was some sort of a loser for not being able to make enough money to live comfortably. We were a “paycheck to paycheck” family and I thought that there was something wrong with me. According to the world we lived in-I was not successful. We struggled with money and I often got depressed and angry that we couldn’t find a way to make more money and still be great parents. I came from a blue collar family that equated working hard with making a great living. That meant dollars for hours and I simply wasn’t willing to be away from our girls. I chose to give up my new career in acting, something that I went to College for, to go into Real Estate so that I...

Work Life Balance

It seems as though work-life balance is a much talked about, yet elusive idea. It is so easy for small business owners, or anyone for that matter, to fall into the trap of all work and no play. We prioritize our work responsibilities to such an extent, that everyone and everything becomes more important than ourselves. It is soooo easy to do this and often it is such a norm for us that we don’t even see it. Have you ever scheduled an appointment with a needy client when you were supposed to go to one of your children’s events? Have you stopped working out because you can’t seem to find the time? Are you putting off that art class that you have been wanting to take because it won’t seem to fit into your already “crazy” schedule? The interesting thing about work/life balance is that it is really about being fulfilled and happy. When we are fulfilled and happy in our life we feel more balanced. Actually, fulfillment and happiness should be the goal for everything in our life. If we make that a priority and use this philosophy as a litmus test for all of our work/life choices-our energy will soar and we will feel more balanced. And yet, we may still be extremely busy. We actually get energy from activities that fulfill us and make us happy because energetically we are vibrating at a higher level. On the contrary, when we are always giving our energy away, without boundaries concerning our time and energy, we become depleted. This is particularly true when we are spending our precious...

The Power of Joy in Your Business

“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.”  ~Kevyn Aucoin I believe that focusing on joy in your business is one of the most important things that we can do in order to feel fulfilled. After all, joy is our birthright. It is important to understand that joy is not something that is a by product of circumstances. We may feel joyful when something great happens like when we get a fabulous new client or exceed our goals. But real inner joy is with us always and is not contingent on outside circumstances. Joy is a choice that we make. It is up to us to focus on joy-no matter what. It is found in the way we look for the golden nuggets in everything that happens to us- things that are in our control and not in our control. Unfortunately, joy is often the missing ingredient in most business plans. We are so hell bent on making sure that we are always in action in order to achieve our goals, that we forget about the incredible energy that we get when we focus on a joyful way of “being”. This is an inner game job! The irony is that we can “do” until we are blue in the face but if we don’t really dissect the way that we are “being” from the inside out-we will sabotage our...

5 Ways to Get Unstuck and Get Going with Your Life

Do you ever hear yourself complaining about the same thing over and over again but you do nothing to change it? Do you have big goals but somehow can’t seem to take the first step? Are you simply wishing and hoping that things will change? We all get stuck at different times in our life. I mean, let’s face it-it is so much easier to stay where we are, even if we are unhappy! You know the saying “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know”. This is not a saying that would empower anyone to move forward in their lives, right? I mean, why do we have to align ourselves with the devil anyways? Sooooo not cool…… How about this for a shift “the devil you know will keep you stuck in complacency if you don’t do something about it-period!” Now doesn’t that make you want to get into action? The key to getting unstuck lies within you. If you do nothing different-nothing will change. Before you say that this is pretty obvious, let me explain. Most of us know that it is up to us to effect change but we don’t do it because it is so much easier for us to stick with inertia. “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.” -Newton’s First Law of Motion That unbalanced force is caused by you doing something differently so that you will start creating momentum. Momentum is a force to...

Time and Money- The Currency We Barter

Years ago when I read Cheryl Richardson’s book Time for Your Life, I had a huge aha moment that changed the way I looked at things. Cheryl talked about the currency of time and how it is most important to value our time as much, if not more, than money. How you spend your time should be intentional! After all, time is a “currency” that is finite. We can never get it back…….so how do we really want to spend it? She actually drilled down the way that we barter time for money by having us ask ourselves something like this: “Is that shirt that is going to cost you $100 worth 5 hours of your precious (working) time? That is what you are really bartering here. Is it worth it?” If the answer is “hell yes” then by all means buy it! If the answer is no-if you value the way that you spend your time more than the shirt-honor that! Most of us were taught that, in order to get ahead, we have to work really hard and “pay our dues”. That meant spending a lot of time working. I come from a hard working blue collar family where the breadwinner, my Father, always said that hard workers would be the successful ones. He worked round the clock to provide a beautiful life for my Mother and his 4 children. We never wanted for anything. He never complained. In fact, he was proud of being able to provide us with everything that he did. None of us ever really realized the sacrifices he made on his time...

Authentic Power-Love is All You Need

I was just listening to an interview with Gary Zukov and he was talking about authentic power and his words are so profound. If you haven’t read his books Seat of the Soul and The Heart of The Soul, I highly recommend them. Basically, he talks about the evolution of our souls and how we are put in the “Earth School” to learn how to become aligned with our soul. Contrary to the egoic model of power that is so prevalent in our society, authentic power is the power to change ourselves from within. It is more about who we are “being” and evolving into. In order to tap into our authentic power, we need to come from a place of love and not fear. Because authentic power is an inner game job, it is not about trying to manipulate the world around us, but rather to make choices that are in our highest and best interest-fueled by the energy of love. According to Gary, every human feels insecure- wants to love and belong but we feel as though we are intrinsically flawed. Furthermore, on a deep “soul” level, we believe that if anyone could see us as we really are, we would not be lovable. This is the challenge of the soul’s journey-to align our true self with love. When we come from a place of love we meet with the fear within ourselves that may otherwise cause us to do things like: play the victim become angry withdraw These are all attempts to manipulate the outside world-to keep us “safe”. When we are in  authentic power, we...
