Time and Money- The Currency We Barter

Years ago when I read Cheryl Richardson’s book Time for Your Life, I had a huge aha moment that changed the way I looked at things. Cheryl talked about the currency of time and how it is most important to value our time as much, if not more, than money. How you spend your time should be intentional! After all, time is a “currency” that is finite. We can never get it back…….so how do we really want to spend it? She actually drilled down the way that we barter time for money by having us ask ourselves something like this: “Is that shirt that is going to cost you $100 worth 5 hours of your precious (working) time? That is what you are really bartering here. Is it worth it?” If the answer is “hell yes” then by all means buy it! If the answer is no-if you value the way that you spend your time more than the shirt-honor that! Most of us were taught that, in order to get ahead, we have to work really hard and “pay our dues”. That meant spending a lot of time working. I come from a hard working blue collar family where the breadwinner, my Father, always said that hard workers would be the successful ones. He worked round the clock to provide a beautiful life for my Mother and his 4 children. We never wanted for anything. He never complained. In fact, he was proud of being able to provide us with everything that he did. None of us ever really realized the sacrifices he made on his time...

Time to Shake Things Up

I believe that  it is really important to “shake things up” once in awhile so that we see things from a different perspective- a much more empowering perspective. Often we get caught up in “figuring things out” for our lives and businesses from a linear perspective. Perhaps we follow a plan that has been successful for someone else and we assume that we will get the same results. However, there is another way and this way, if you are not familiar with it, may seem a little bit daunting or woowoo for those of you pragmatic folks out there. This other way has us  tapping  into universal wisdom and combines it with the DNA of our Soul so that we tune into solutions that we may not have thought of. It involves being in congruence with what feels great and creative and expansive instead of unexciting, tried and true, and typical. Although it doesn’t come with a recipe for certainty, it is super juice for entrepreneurs because it allows us to put our personal stamp on everything that we do. If we follow our soul’s whispers we will feel empowered to trust ourselves more from the inside out and we will create a life beyond our wildest dreams. When the personality comes fully to serve the energy of its soul, that is authentic empowerment. ~Gary Zukav When we feel empowered from the inside out, our lives and businesses are in flow because we are aligned with a much more profound source of energy. We become more resourceful and things come to us easily. We actually magnetize things to our...

Baby Boomer Women- Finally Having Your Cake and Eating it Too

Many of us in the Baby Boomer generation know what it is like to see life go by too quickly. We wish that we could just slow down time so that we could savor the moments. If you are a business owner like myself maybe you too wish that you didn’t have to work so many hours. Maybe you want to create a deeper meaning in your life and business so that your business is an extension of a life lived on purpose. And you also want to be feel financially abundant! You want to have your cake and eat it too. Our careers or businesses have been born and sometimes fizzled in lieu of something else. In the blink of an eye our babies have left the nest to start their lives anew. Loved ones have left us-some far too soon. Some of us have become Grandparents. Often our dreams have been usurped by responsibilities and duty. We wish we had more time and energy to revel in the nuances of everyday life instead of being pulled into the undertow of making a living. We wish that we had more time for our art or writing or spirituality or taking better care of our bodies or……..(fill in the blanks). Those  of us who worked hard to create a business or career that would support our family are beginning to want something more. We may love our businesses but we know that there is something missing…….something very important! We want ourselves back! We want to live our lives with intentionality! We want to start honoring the essence of who...

Three Strategies to Supercharge Your Business

I coach many entrepreneurs who are stuck in their business. They want to grow but there are things that get in their way. What is interesting is that it is typically about who they are “being” in their business that keeps them stuck rather than what they are doing. It is their mindset around their challenges that block them. So I would like to propose 3 ways to get out of stuck and start soaring: Set Better Boundaries- Boundaries are important because they help us honor what is really important to us. They allow us to take charge of our time and own our value. When we respect ourselves, others will follow. I remember when I had no boundaries when I was selling Real Estate many years ago. I let my customers dictate my time, always jumping to please. I was like a puppet on a string. I ended up becoming very burnt out and resentful because I never allowed myself any time for me. I wasn’t honoring my own health and well being. What I realize looking back is that I had created this monster because I allowed it to happen instead of setting healthy boundaries. It is the difference between being proactive and reactive. Once I realized that it was up to me to take care of me, everything changed. I felt so much better about my business and it began growing effortlessly. I felt lighter, happier and less stressed. And my customers totally respected my time. I still give awesome service but not at the expense of my health and well being. I made a decision to...

Personal Growth-Your Way

Understand that the right to choose your own path is a sacred privilege. Use it. Dwell in possibility.-Oprah I recently did a survey asking women over 50 who were on my email list or Facebook page to rate what was most important to them. There were 83 responses  and the three top things that they listed in order of importance was personal growth, health and wellness and business and career. So I wanted to do a deeper dive and explore what personal growth meant to these women and just as I had imagined, it meant something different to each of them. Here is a sampling of what they said: being comfortable with who I am keeping a promise to myself being able to activate those dreams I pushed aside learning to be the best me without caring what others think defying ageism by not worrying about what society dictates for me as a middle aged woman becoming more aware of my inner voice that shows me my best path making the most of each moment-not dwelling on the past or future my “kick in the butt” to keep trying and learning new things facing my fears head on being able to look back at myself in history and not recognize myself realizing that what used to be important is not now-what was not important now is the ability to be in two places at once in my mind-satisfaction with my accomplishments and the willingness and courage to risk what I have got to move forward making choices that will stretch me to be the best version of myself making...

Your Business, Your Life, Your Way

Have you been so consumed by your business that it is taking over your life? Did you start your business because you thought that it would give you more freedom but you find that the opposite is true? Do you have a deep desire to do more of the things that you always wanted to do but can’t seem to find the time? If you answered yes to any of these questions then it may be time for you to reevaluate your business model so that it supports your life instead of the other way around. I can just hear all of your gremlins coming up saying that this may be possible for others but not for you. You are telling yourself that you are the glue that keeps every customer happy, troubleshoots every minute problem and keeps the income flowing in by being at everybody’s beck and call. And I get it. I come from an extensive background in the Real Estate sales world where this mentality was rampant. Real Estate agents are paid on commission and only when a house sells. The fear of losing a client before the transaction is consummated would mean working countless hours for no pay and this causes most agents to jump through massive hoops to get and retain clients. This mindset that is energetically born of fear (scarcity and lack) causes many agents to give up on having any days off, important time with family and mental downtime. They let their customers dictate their schedules and then they eventually become burnt out and resentful because they go for months without replenishing...
