Hi Marianne,
I appreciate your guidance to people who have urge to launch off and do something they really love. It takes guts. A lot of people have the talent to have their own design business but have tons of practical questions like, “How much do I charge?”, “How do I find clients?” “How do I market myself”. Not having the answers to those practical questions can completely stop someone in their tracks.
A new company just launched from one of the founders of Pottery Barn that fills in all those blanks. I recently went up to San Francisco to check them out. They have an ingenious mobile IPhone/IPad design app that uses clients photos of their homes. For instance, you take a photos of their sofa and pop on pillows, throws, ottomans, accessories fro their line of merchandise.
It’s such an easy way to get your foot in the door to do design makeovers. People appreciate not having to imagine how things will look. they what things look like, love it, you take their order and swipe their credit card on your phone. So easy.
They also offer certified design training. I recommend checking them out. It’s a good way to give someone confidence, get training and have ongoing support from a company with the standard of Pottery Barn.
